The odds of an average golfer hitting a hole-in-one are estimated to be around 12,500 to 1.
Even professional golfers only have about a 2,500 to 1 chance. This makes it a truly special and memorable accomplishment.

As I walked to the tee box of the 5th hole, pondering my disappointing play on the previous four holes, I was thinking to myself, 'there are still 14 holes of golf left to play, I could still catch fire and shoot a very good score. ' then I watched my next tee shot fly directly toward the flag stick, bounce twice on the front of the green, and trickle into the cup. I raced to the left side of the tee box to make sure that the ball wasn't hiding behind the flagstick. The whole experience was surprisingly uneventful in the context of an eighteen hole round of golf. The most gratifying part of the experience was being able to immediately call my wife and share the good news. During the past fourteen years I have occasionally envied other golfer's hole-in-one accomplishments and wondered it would ever happen for me. If it happens for me again I hope I can post a much better total score.
