The odds of an average golfer hitting a hole-in-one are estimated to be around 12,500 to 1.
Even professional golfers only have about a 2,500 to 1 chance. This makes it a truly special and memorable accomplishment.

As this was only the second competition game of golf I had ever played and my partners were experienced golfers (13 and 19 handicaps) I did not really appreciate the significance of the event however my partners did as they had been playing for years and never looked like scoreing an ace and as such I came in for a fair amount of good natured banter for the remainder of the game and even more so when I returned to the club house as it was also the pro hole for the day and as we were the second team to tee off on the back nine for the day I certainly destroyed some of the players chances for winning the hole who were much better players than I am. Now 5 years later I am still getting good natured banter by those who remember that a second game player with a 27 handicap scored a hole in one on his 20th competition hole of golf.
