The odds of an average golfer hitting a hole-in-one are estimated to be around 12,500 to 1.
Even professional golfers only have about a 2,500 to 1 chance. This makes it a truly special and memorable accomplishment.

I was having the best round I'd ever had. With 3 holes to play I was on the verge of breaking 80 and yet had not made a birdie during the round. The pin on the par 3 16th was tucked over a ridge in the back left of the elevated green. We could only see half the flag from the tee. I hit an easy 5 iron that hit the top of the ridge and settled quickly. It looked like it was tracking to the hole and I was thinking it would be close. My playing partner commented that 'I think I saw the flag jiggle. That might be in! ' as we approached the green I didn't want to get my hopes up and when we saw no ball near the flag my pulse got a fair bit quicker. I walked around the green to check the back bunker but my partner went straight for the hole. 'it's in! ' he shouted. It's funny because it happens so quickly and then it's over and you have to get on with the next hole. I managed to finish par bogey on the tough finishing holes to post a 75. It was by far my best round ever.
