The odds of an average golfer hitting a hole-in-one are estimated to be around 12,500 to 1.
Even professional golfers only have about a 2,500 to 1 chance. This makes it a truly special and memorable accomplishment.

I was going to play 9 on my own that day but due to some slow play I ended up joining the group behind me, tom and patti mattison. We get up to the tee box and I decided to hit the 9 just to land it on the front side of the green and give myself a nice put at the hole. That was the plan of course but then I ended up thinning it. Great line though and hit just in front of the green. There was a small hill that blocked the pin so I couldn't tell where it landed but I just had a feeling that it was going to be right on it... Maybe even in it... Tom and patti hit and then hop in their cart and ride up to the hole. I'm walking so I'm a few paces behind. I keep walking on my tippee toes thinking I'm going to see the ball right next to the flag but as I get closer and closer I don't see it. I'm starting to get more excited but also more nervous. I ask tom and patti if they've seen my ball as I am about 10 yards out from the green and they look around and suggest that maybe it rolled down off the back. Damn... I was so certain it was going to be good though I said "is there any chance it's in that hole? " patti being the closest walks up, leans over and takes a peak. "I think I'm just going to let you check this out for yourself". Ace.
